Price Hired as Manager in Cincinnati

On Monday, October 21, the Cincinnati Reds announced Bryan Price as their new manager. On Tuesday, Price was formally introduced as the Redlegs’ skipper during a press conference.
Price has been with the Reds organization since October 2009 when he was hired on as a pitching coach. Under his command for the previous four years, the Reds’ pitching has finished seventh, 12th, third and fourth in the National League in ERA. Want some perspective? In the three years before he was with the club, their pitching finished seventh, 13th and 15th.
Cultivating a crop of new talent, pitchers such as Aroldis Chapman, Mike Leake, Tony Cingrani and Sam LeCure have all ripened under the wing of Price. Johnny Cueto and Homer Bailey didn’t come in with the new skipper, but they’ve certainly improved just the same.
After pitching for the California Golden Bears baseball team in college, Price entered the minor leagues in 1984 reaching as high as Class AA with the California Angels organization.
Released in 1986, Price returned to baseball in 1988 after taking a year from the game. Playing Class AA and AAA ball in the Seattle Mariners organization, he never made the final step to the major leagues. During his five-year career, he accumulated a record of 31-19 with an ERA of 3.74.
Succeeding his short-lived playing days, Price was hired by the Mariners to be their new pitching coach. During his stint in Seattle from 2001-2006, he was awarded USA Today Baseball Weekly’s Pitching Coach of the Year Award in 2001 for leading the pitching staff to the American League’s ERA title.
From 2006 until his resignation in May of 2009, Price served the same role with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Before he stepped down following the replacement of then-manager Bob Melvin, in 2007 Price was named Major League Coach of the Year by Baseball America.
