UK in the NFL Week 8

Kenny Vaccaro, Malcolm Jenkins, Steve Johnson

In the eighth week of NFL play, several former Cats continued to see success on the field.

Facing the ever-dangerous RGIII, the Denver Broncos defense stood strong holding the Redskins offense to 266 total yards with linebackers Danny Trevathan and Wesley Woodyard leading the charge.

In addition to combining for 10 tackles, Trevathan forced a fumble that was recovered by the Broncos. Holding down the top spot, the former Cat leads all other Broncos’ defenders by a nine-tackle deficit. On the year, Trevathan has combined for 59 tackles, adding three interceptions and now after this week’s performance, a forced fumble.

Teammate Wesley Woodyard, still battling lingering neck symptoms, saw his stats decline as he recorded four solo tackles and another assisted to combine for five. Woodyard now has 40 tackles and 1.5 sacks on the year.

Tight end Jacob Tamme continued to gradually build his numbers as he caught one pass for a 15-yard gain on Sunday. Listed as third on the depth chart and seeing more playing time on special teams, Tamme has managed to haul in three receptions for 27 yards.

In a 35-17 loss handed to the Bills in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, Buffalo wide receiver Steve Johnson dashed for 72 yards on seven receptions and made a house call as the ex-Cat scored his third touchdown of the year. Johnson has caught 33 passes for 387 yards, the most of any other Bills receiver.

Even without team leading receiver Randall Cobb, the Green Bay Packers traveled to Minnesota and were methodical with their offensive attack. How methodical? Converting 13 of 18 third downs and a perfect two for two on fourth downs, the special teams services of punter Tim Masthay were not required. Punt-less for the first time this year, the Packers won, 44-31.

Alfonso Smith and the Arizona Cardinals hosted the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in Glendale, AZ. In the Cards’ 27-13 win, Smith did not see the field once. After falling from backup to third on the depth chart, the emergence of Andre Ellington has caused Smith to see a decline in playing time. On the year, the third stringer has rushed 18 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, plus another 62 yards on nine receptions.

On the losing sideline, defensive tackle Corey Peters made three solo tackles and recorded a sack in the Falcons’ shortcoming. Peters ranks seventh amongst Falcons defenders in terms of total tackles with 24, however the UK product has notched the second most sacks on the team with 3.0 on the year.

Flying under the radar hidden deep on the New York Giants roster, fullback John Conner made a catch that he turned up field for 12 yards in their 15-7 win over the Eagles. Originally cut in August by the Cincinnati Bengals, a successful workout with Buffalo caught the eye of Giants GM Jerry Reese who then inked the bruiser to a two-year contract. In three starts this season, Conner has nabbed four receptions amassing 29 yards.

Playing in America’s Game of the Week, Larry Warford and the Detroit Lions were able to pull away with a narrow victory, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 31-30. Receiving praise all year long by ESPN and analysts such as Mel Kiper Jr., Warford made a rookie mistake and was flagged for a false start, his first and only penalty of the year.
