UK Basketball Freshman Out for Season

In a press release by UK athletics it was announced that freshman women's basketball player Kyvin Goodin-Rodgers would be unable to play this season. Goodin-Rodgers was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism on Monday after she reported sharp chest pains to senior athletic trainer Courtney Jones. She was taken to Albert B. Chandler Hospital at UK where they confirmed a blood clot in her lung. 

Coach Matthew Mitchell was quoted in the statement saying, "This condition requires her to be on blood thinners for several months, therefore she will not be able to play this season...Kyvin's health is our main concern right now. We are confident we'll move forward in a positive direction with this challenge."

Goodin-Rodgers is a Kentucky native and was high school teammates with fellow UK Hoops freshman Makayla Epps. Rodgers is 18 and listed by UK as a a 6-1 forward was was to wear jersey number 5. She was ranked by ESPN.com as the 19th best forward in the nation and averaged 12.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.4 blocks her senior year at Marion High. She was also a finalist for the 2013 Miss Kentucky Basketball award and helped lead the Lady Knights to a 39-0 record and a state title. 

Since Goodin-Rodgers is a true freshman, she will likely redshirt this season and return to the court after her treatment runs its course and be back in time for next season. We wish a speedy recovery to Kyvin!
