I am the producer / booker of The Sports Huddle. My views are my own and do not reflect the opinions of the management of ESPN Sports Radio 1300 in general or of the hosts of The Sports Huddle in particular. The reverse is also most definitely true.

Tony Gwynn

As a kid coming up in the late 80s/early 90s there were a few things you could count on. Your tv would be tuned to NBC on Thursday nights to check in on the Huxtables, the San Francisco 49ers would be in the playoffs, Michael Jordan would win the scoring title and Tony Gwynn would lead the NL in hitting. Today the kids of that era must say farewell to one of our heroes. Tony Gwynn passed away this morning at the age of 54.

I moved around a ton as a kid and so had a chance to see Tony at several stadiums. My dad took me to see him at Riverfront, Shea and Fulton County Stadium. At each of those I would join the other kids clustered at the rail nearest the visitors dugout hoping for a player to stop and acknowledge us. At every single one of those stadiums Tony would stop and autograph anything we could get to him, answer any questions he could decipher from all the chatter, give us a big grin & be on his way.

One of my prized possessions as a kid was an autographed Tony Gwynn card. It held a place of honor between my Don Mattingly/Dave Winfield autographed photo & my Phil Simms autographed mini-football. So thanks Tony, for 20 years of baseball greatness. And thanks even more for brightening the days of kids across the country. R.I.P.
