Tates Creek defeats Lafayette in high-emotion thriller

Lafayette took on Tates Creek on the road for the Roy Walton Bowl at Tates Creek. The stakes were high with a win in a rivalry game, but also a district title on Tates Creek’s senior night.

Eric Shaw’s Generals had an impressive first half under freshman quarterback Walker Wood who connected with Dontavion “Lucky” Jackson for several big plays. In the first quarter Wood marched his team down the field to score first off a handoff to Malik Robinson, making the score 7-0.

With 1:44 in the second quarter, Coach Harmon’s Tates Creek Commodores answered with a Jaren Shelby touchdown to even the score 7-7. But with 1:05 left in the half Lafayette answered again when Wood connected with Serafini on a 20 yard pass to up the score 14-7.

Tates Creek came alive in the second half and in the third quarter, Tates Creek had 21 unanswered points; a 7 yard run from Jaren Shelby, a 32 yard pass to RJ Taylor from Graham Gordon, and Gordon on a 2 yard carry to put the Commodores up 28-14. Lafayette ended the quarter with a kickoff return by Kylan Nelson to bring the score within a touchdown.

In the fourth quarter, RJ Taylor connected with Graham Gordon again on a 66-yard pass to bring the score up 35-21. With 54 seconds left to go in the game Jackson connected with Wood again for a touchdown to make the score 35-28, but it wasn’t enough giving Tates Creek the victory and district title.

Tates Creek standout players included RJ Taylor who had 144 receiving yards for 2 touchdowns and 6 unassisted tackles.  Casey Grimes also had 86 net rushing yards with a 6.1 average per play, as well as 11 receiving yards and 3 unassisted tackles with two assisted and 1.5 tackles for loss with Eamon Nasr helping out on the other half tackle for loss. Jaren Shelby had 43 net yards for two touchdowns, and Max Sweet 14 rushing yards, 18 receiving yards, 3 assisted and 3 unassisted tackles including 2 tackles for loss.

Lafayette standout players were freshman quarterback who threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Wood was 11 for 18 on completions and his longest pass was a 55 yarder. Wood also rushed for a net 33 yards. Malik Robinson had a net 55 rushing yards and one touchdown. Lucky Jackson had 141 receiving yards and one touchdown. Mason Alstatt had 5 unassisted tackles and 4 assisted including one tackle for loss and Kylan Nelson had 15 rushing yards and 11 total tackles, 5 unassisted including one tackle for loss as well.
This was a game of onside kicks and penalties if you had to sum it up. Tates Creek took advantage of several onside kicks giving them the advantage they needed for the win. In penalties, Lafayette had 11 penalties for 101 yards, and Tates Creek had 9 penalties for 72 yards.

Both teams move on into the playoffs. Lafayette’s two game winning streak was broken and they now fall to 3-7 and 2-1 in the district. Tates Creek is now 6-4 on the season and 2-1 in the district as well.
