Despite USA just beating Ghana in the World Cup 2-1 (literally minutes ago)….other BIG sports news today includes a Lexington native….
Tate’s Creek shortstop, Devin Hairston was named Co-Mr. Kentucky Baseball this afternoon along with Henderson County’s Caleb Duckworth.
Hairston who has signed with Louisville, led Top ranked Tate’s Creek to it’s second consecutive 11th region title this season by hitting .408 with 3 home runs, 25 RBI, and 42 runs scored. Hairston also known as a great defensive player, was surprised by the award.
He says that he found out by a text message from a friend saying “Congratulations”. He responded by asking what he was being congratulated for? It was followed by a screen shot of the announcement on twitter that he had been selected for the prestigious award.
Hairston is the eighth Lexington player to earn Mr. Baseball honors, following Bryan Station’s Ryne Combs (2012), Lexington Catholic’s Ben Revere (2007), Lafayette’s Chaz Roe (2005), Henry Clay’s Collin Cowgill (2004), Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Josh Ellis (2003), Lafayette’s Austin Kearns (1998) and Henry Clay’s Scott Hodges (1997).
Hairston originally committed to play baseball at University of Kentucky where he would have joined his older brother Dorian Hairston, who just completed his sophomore season as a wildcat. Hairston feels that U of L is a better fit for the college experience he is wanting compared to UK. He will be the first Mr. KY baseball that attends Louisville.
He will report to Louisville in just a few weeks to begin summer classes and is very excited about joining the Cardinals’ program, which has reached the College World Series two years in a row.
Unfortunately, the Cards just lost against Texas ending their run in Omaha.
That’s all for my “evening” edition of Monday’s blog. Have a great week! :)
