Well if your a UK fan in the least, you found out today that renovations to Rupp Arena came to a screaming halt. Earlier today Lexington mayor Jim Gray announced a suspension of work on the project citing the University of Kentucky’s withdrawal of support for a proposed annual $10.7 million lease beginning in 2018.
As discussed on the show a few weeks ago; a letter from UK’s president Capilouto came out in May after being pressed to come out publicly in support of the project. I expressed my view of this project on the show but will do so again in this blog.
I feel that the real reasons for the renovations of Rupp arena are only in response and mainly in comparison to Louisville’s newly built facility: The Yum Center. It’s simply a “Battle of the Jones’s”. He has a bigger and better house, so now we need a bigger and even better one.
Yes, I know that UK has one of, if not the best college basketball programs EVER! We are the Big Blue Nation for a reason. I understand this and totally agree! What I don’t understand is the fact that so many people are so eager to do away with the traditions of Rupp. My mentality-Why change or hinder what’s already a great thing?
I applaud President Capilouto’s ability to stand firm behind his reasoning of not supporting this project. There are other more important concerns with the University as a whole currently going on.
Of course these are only my personal feelings concerning the matter. Maybe I’ve rocked your boat or maybe not even got close to tipping it? Either way, I want to know your ideas, feelings, and/or concerns with this issue.
