America's new soccer hero Tim Howard
After watching that game yesterday, even for those of you who are not soccer fans, can agree that Tim Howard is an amazing athlete and did a phenomenal job for team USA. He did such a good job that someone updated his Wikipedia page with "he is now the American Jesus". Those are big words from a nation that is not necessarily considered a dominant soccer nation.
I think it's safe to say that without Tim Howard being in the goal for team USA during this World Cup, USA would never have made it this far.
Howard, who grew up in New Jersey and played in Major League Soccer before moving to the English Premier League in 2003, made 16 saves, the most by a goalkeeper in a World Cup game since 1966.
Despite his record breaking performance the most interesting fact I found about Howard was this….He's a devout Christian
Faith is a key part of Howard's life and shapes who he is.
"The most important thing in my life is Christ," Howard said in a 2006 interview with Campus Crusade for Christ. "He's more important to me than winning or losing or whether I'm playing or not. Everything else is just a bonus."
For the same reason I'm a Tim Tebow fan...I love that Howard is open about his faith!!
Tim Tebow and Tim Howard, must be something about the name "Tim". I seriously need to consider this when one day naming my own children. ;)
I will leave you with this…Another interesting statistic I found: For the tournament's games in general there's been a 50% audience increase in the U.S.. from those of the World Cup in South Africa, 4.3 million against 2.8 million in 2010.
Hope you enjoyed my fun facts of the day!
